Maths

We aim to enable children to realise their full potential in Mathematics by teaching and learning using a variety of appropriate styles and resources, engaging children in a range of activities and fostering independence.

Key Stage 3 - Years 7-9
From year 7 students are taught in sets according to ability. The department uses the SMP Interact Scheme published by Cambridge University Press as its core text. Students are given homework tasks mainly from practice books to consolidate the learning that has taken place in class.

Key Stage 4 - Year 10 In year 10
students continue to be taught in sets according to ability and will follow either a course at Foundation level (grades C to G) or Higher level (grades A* to E) using the SMP Interact Scheme. Around three quarters of the year group will also sit GCSE Statistics at either Foundation or Higher level, following the AQA specification, at the end of year 10. The course has a coursework task, completed during the Spring term, which accounts for 25% of the final mark.

Year 11
All students in year 11 will sit GCSE Mathematics, following the Edexcel specification, at either Foundation or Higher level. There is no coursework for GCSE Mathematics and students are expected to complete homework tasks mainly set from practice books and past papers.

Support for Learning
Revision materials at both Key Stages are available on the school’s Virtual Learning area. In addition the department subscribes to the MyMaths website which students are able to access from home using the login details provided by their Mathematics teacher. Additionally students may be set homework tasks from the site.

Enrichment Activities
Each year approximately 180 children across all year groups take part in either the Junior or Intermediate Mathematics Challenge set by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT). Every year a team of four children from years 8 and 9 take part in a Team Maths Challenge against other schools in the county, again organised by the UKMT.
