Physical Education

The department follows National Curriculum Guidelines for PE. All children in Years 7 and 8 are involved in athletics, gymnastics, outdoor education and games. In games, children take part in the following sports; Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Soccer, Cricket, Rounders and Basketball. Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 have the opportunity to follow a variety of activities through a personalised learning programme which will include Cycling, Boxercise, TaeKwanDo, Body Combat use of the Fitness suite as well as the normal team games.

Students in Years 10 and 11 have the opportunity to follow a GCSE PE Course or a BTEC First Diploma in Sport.

All students at KS4 will have the opportunity to study a Sports Leadership Award level 1 and 2.  Pupils receive a PHSE programme which is taught through the median of Sport and PE. They cover a Young Leaders Course and a St John's First Aid Qualification. Throughout all years of schooling pupils are also given the opportunity to to act as Leaders in Primary School Festivals.

Pupils who regularly perform at County Level or above also have the opportunity to bid for funds to help with their coaching or transport costs.

In extra-curricular sporting activities all children have the opportunity to represent their form and House at lunchtimes in a variety of House sports. Regular coaching and matches also take place immediately after school and sometimes at weekends. The school is involved in area league competitions in the following sports at all age levels: Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Soccer, Cricket, Athletics, Tennis and Rounders.

Our outdoor facilities include a 3rd Generation All Weather Pitch (AWP) football pitch. This is a community use facility which can also be used for hockey and 5-a-side football. Surrounding the AWP is a 400m running track with purpose built javelin, discus, long jump, high jump and discus areas. All this is floodlit . The grass area includes a cricket square, cricket nets and pavilion, a full size rugby pitch and a football area. There are also four floodlit netball courts, 4 tennis courts as well as a hard area basketball courts.

Early in 1998 work was completed on the £1 million community leisure complex. This includes a sports hall, extended and refurbished changing facilities, fitness studio and multi-activity area.

The facilities at the school are used extensively by the students, and the local community and since the leisure complex has been completed usage has dramatically increased.
